Student Feature: Maja Olsson

This Thursday's student feature is Maja Olsson, a senior Creative Writing major coming from Warren Wilson college!

Q: Where are you from?

A: West Point, VA near Richmond.

Q: Where do you go to school?

A: Warren Wilson in Swannanoa, North Carolina. Happy to be in the city, but I will miss the mountains changing colors!

Q: Where are you interning at?

A: I'm working with Brooklyn filmmaker, Caveh Zahedi, on The Show About the Show. I'm also working at Anarchists' Convention, which is independent filmmaker John Sayles' company.

Q: Why this internship?

A: I am ready to begin professional work. I've written a few screenplays, so I really want to learn how these things are produced and how to direct. I hope I can show my work to people while I'm here!

Q: Does this tie in with your major/what you want to do in life?

A: I am a creative writing major. I have all these ideas I've developed through my major, and now I want to bring into reality with film and animation. I would like to be a screenwriter/director/show creator.

Q: Why NYAP/How did you hear about the program?

A:I learned about it through the Career Development Center and Study Abroad Office at my school.

Q: Where is your “hot spot” in the city so far?

A: The bike path along the Hudson! I love the salty smell of the water and the trees!

Q: What has been your best experience so far?

A: I met Brooklyn filmmakers after a screening one weekend. Everyone in the industry I've met so far has been really welcoming! I really hope to hang out with them again, because they were a fun crowd! I also went to Comic Con, and got really inspired. I went to a panel called "A Career in Animation" with Rebecca Sugar, Mike Roth, and Phil Rynda. It was so exciting. They were so friendly too. All the panels I went to at Comic Con were great. I liked being exposed to new comics in a panel called "Representation Matter! How to respectfully write and draw POC and LGBTIA Characters."

Q: Worst?

A: Threw up in Penn Station. Pretty funny story, but obviously not great at the time.

Q: Subway or walking?

A: Biking.

Q: Best events you’ve been to around the city?

A: Comic Con.

Q: Any tips on how to save money while living here?

A: I got a waffle maker and I eat a waffle everyday instead of breakfast and lunch.

Q: Favorite part of NY? Park? Midtown? Queens? Brooklyn? Etc.

A: I've explored Mid-town most. Got to get over to Brooklyn for sure.

Q: Is there something you are looking forward to doing?

A: Cartooning with my friend Mackenzie in Bryant Park this weekend. And also sharing my favorite spots with the people who visit me in New York while I'm here!

Q: Have you found any hidden spots or have secret tips in NY that you wanna share?

A: It's really easy to get tickets to Live with Kelly and Ryan if you want to see how TV works and see a celebrity.

Q: Seen any celebs yet?

A: I've seen Harrison Ford, Kate Winslet, Viola Davis, Adam Scott, Kiefer Sutherland, and Terry Crews on Live with Kelly and Ryan. Bill Skarsgård and Melanie Lynskey were in our hotel during Comic Con, and I got a photo with the later.  I saw Rebecca Sugar, Mike Roth, Phil Rynda, John DiMaggio, Tara Strong, and tons of actors at Comic Con.  I went to the D.C. Universe panel and got to see both voices of Batman from the animated movies.
